Longtime link in regional commerce, Kalama joins BLS

The Kalama River starts in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
near the famous volcano Mount St. Helens.
Home to hundreds of local businesses and nearly 3,000 residents, the city of Kalama today is the newest partner of the state Business Licensing Service (BLS).

The city is along the Lower Columbia River in a serendipitous location where "rail meets sail." It's a historic linchpin of regional commerce because western railroads laid tracks to this city alongside the wide river channel that became a gateway to Pacific Rim trade.

Kalama shares its name with the eponymous river that starts south of Mount St. Helens and winds its way to the lower Columbia River. The Cowlitz County community is now linked to dozens of southwest Washington cities to connect state and local licensing processes.

The Kalama River flows into the lower Columbia River
where outdoor recreation opportunities are plentiful.
